Perception of scarcity the root of all evil? (And how to fight it)

In this world there sometimes seems to be an overwhelming sense that there isn't enough. Not enough food, not enough shelter, not enough love not enough time and happiness. The only thing we seem to get enough off are people, insects, work and bills.

Our minds are constantly seeking out and finding lack in the department of happiness and excess of things we'd rather not deal with. However, just because we experience it doesn't mean that it is the truth.

Think about it. Our minds fixate on things of interest. For instance have you ever noticed that you have a conversation about a special topic, famous person or a thing. All of a sudden you see it everywhere.

Imagine (or remember perhaps) expecting a baby. All of a sudden there are babies and baby products everywhere. On TV, billboards, in the grocery isles, walking down the street. It seems as if the world suddenly exploded with babies. However the reality is that there are no more babies and baby products around than there has always been. It's just your perception that has changed.

Your mind is seeking out information relating to babies and so that is what you will register.

"So what has that got to do with scarcity being the root of all evil? I thought it was money", you ask. Well give me a moment to continue. Where were we?

Back to the never ending stream of 'werk werk werk werk werk', 'bills bills bills bills bills' lonely nights in front of the telly and those pesky mosquitoes. I mean really that's not just in my mind or, is it?

Well, it is and it isn't. It is true most of us work excessively for very little return, there are a lot of lonely people (finding a good partner just seems impossible these days) and mosquitoes, no one loves them. However, let's look at it a little deeper.

If you have a job. Chances are you will feel like it is draining you. Taking up too much of your happy time and isn't really giving you the comforts you had hoped. I mean money never ever seems to be enough. Now let's say you lose that job or income. How do you feel about it then? We all of a sudden those hours don't seem to bad, the work is kind of fund and all those things you wish you could do if only you haad that income.

See our perception is what dictates whether we are in lack or in abundance. And it seems society has us focused on lack. And for good reason, at least if you are in the business of running the world.

Our perception is that we lack or there is scarcity in the things that we need. When we live in a sense of scarcity we automatically become competitive. Our natural instinct is to guard our territory, hoard things and defend ourselves against any and everyone all means necessary so as to survive. Every other person and their mother become our enemy. They are a potential threat to our own personal security and survival.

We are taught from an early age that there is always less things than there are people that need or want them. That is how we are taught to value things. The more scarce a thing is the higher its value and the more you should aspire to get it. And this is how society and the media control our choices and our lives.

It is not money per se that is the evil. It is the perception of scarcity that bring about our basic competitive predator instinct for survival. Or evil if you like. Because that really is all it is. Our instinct removed from critical thinking.

What is holding you, me and everyone else back is that we are not seeing the forest for the trees. We are still in a lack and fear based mentality and so the famous crabs in a barrel effect has us scrambling to survive. We hurt each-other as a result. We alienate from our neighbors, congregate with other fearful people in groups of us and them. We kill and get killed. All because of our skewed perception.

But here are the good news. Life really is abundant. It abounds with all the things you really want and need. And if you look for it you will see it. There are no water crisis (although the powers to be work hard to create them). There is no food shortage it is just ill distributed by those who want to make money out of our fears of lack. Not everyone police man wants to shoot you and Donald Trump (Ok, well I admit it is hard to find anything positive to say so I won't try). Let's jut say he is the epitome of fear and scarcity based mentality. The caricature of what we look like as we live our live our lives thinking we don't have enough. Let him be the reminder, your mirror into your own madness.

The truth is nature abounds with food, water and healing herbs for all. Your neighborhood is full of wonderful people who would love nothing more than to be happy and share their happiness with you. There are more than enough wonderful single men and women out there for you to find someone that you can relate to and potentially build a future with. And there is opportunity to do work that truly makes you happy and live a good life off of it. And the key is learning how to see it. All it takes is a change of mind and a little repetition.

I will leave you with an exercise in abundance. If you read this far then you might as well try it right? I mean what do you have to loose? Try it for a week and let me know what happens. Keep it simple. Consistency is the key so don't focus on everything at once. Chose one thing that you would like more of in your life and build from there.

An exercise in abundance.

What you need

Pen, paper, an alarm clock and 21-days of dedication.

Preparation

Sit down with your pen and paper and write down all the things that you feel are lacking in your life. Make it a numbered list. Now chose one of the items on your list. It is important that you only chose one at this point. Write a list of positive words associated with having this thing in your life. Write a list of ways you would behave if you already had this thing. Write a list of ways your life would improve in other ways if you had this thing. Be very specific. Once you have your list of association as I call it, this will be your go to these 21-days.

The exercise

Set your alarm to ring every 2h or 3h of the day (Make sure it does not disrupt your sleep, we need you to be well rested and happy as you do this). If you like there are meditation apps that you can use for the same thing. However your cellphone has reminders that can be set as easily. Try to chose an alarm that induces happiness not stress. If you make your own chose a melody that is in line with the thing you are focusing on.

Now every time your alarm rings I want you to:

1. Bring out the List of Association. Take a good look at it.

2. Repeat to yourself three times "I already have *insert thing you are focusing on*."

3. Now from that moment and for as long as you can maintain focus, (in the beginning it might only be 5-10 minutes, but with time and practice it will become second nature). You are going to use as many of the List of Association words as you can into your regular conversation and you are going to behave as if you already have the thing you want. And that is it.

Do this for the magical 21-days. Observe what happens and if you journal, take down the results.

With love and abundance *Nia Love*
